Services: Gravity Methods

Applications

  • Contrast earth densities
  • Identify voids and karst features
  • Map bedrock features

The gravity method measures differences in gravitational attraction at the earth's surface. After corrections have been made for several factors, these differences depend only on the density changes in the materials near the measurement site. The gravity method is useful whenever subsurface changes in density need to be detected, i.e., when attempting to map voids or cavities, bedrock topography, formation or pluton boundaries, faults, and/or landfill extent. These density differences can be determined from gravity data collected at regularly spaced intervals and processed into contour maps or profiles.
